Jake has extensive defamation and media experience. He has acted for several major media organisations, including the publishers of The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Financial Review, and The Daily Telegraph, the ABC, SBS, FBi Radio and The Daily Aus. Jake has represented individuals, media organisations, insurers and universities in defamation proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia, the Supreme Courts of NSW, Queensland and the ACT, and lower courts around Australia. He has also appeared for the media in relation to contentious non-publication and suppression orders, access to court documents and other interlocutory actions. Jake also provides prepublication advice to various publishers and broadcasters.
Jake regularly advises on all aspects of privacy regulation, including compliance with the Australian Privacy Principles, data protection and security, and the newly enacted tort for serious invasions of privacy.
Jake’s corporate and commercial clients include technology startups, film, television and music producers, hospitality and retail clients, regularly advising in relation to a range of contentious, corporate and transactional matters.
Jake has acted for indigenous artists in relation to public art commissions for large-scale infrastructure projects, including the Sydney Metro and the Western Sydney Airport. He also advises a number of cultural and philanthropic organisations in relation to governance issues, charitable registration, DGR endorsement and other issues, and oversees BHF’s pro bono practice.
Jake was recognised by Doyle's Guide in 2024 as a ‘Recommended Technology, Media and Telecommunications Lawyer’. He has also participated in legal reform advocacy and has written articles on media law for The Sydney Morning Herald and other publications.
